The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, Stillwater Field Office has completed a Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Sand Mountain Recreation Area [SMRA] Campground Improvement and Maintenance EA. The BLM is seeking public comment and input on this DEA and public input under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act for the project. This includes seeking information and identifying historic properties in or near the project area. Public comments will be accepted through March 1, 2019.

This DEA analyzes the proposal by the BLM and potential impacts from the proposed improvement and maintenance of SMRA. The Proposed Action is to improve public access and safety by improving and maintaining the 72-acre primitive campground at SMRA. Improvements would include grading the camping area, redeveloping and signing camping area spur roads, creating transition aprons to the spur roads, expansion of the administrative use area including a medical helicopter landing pad and developing two “Learner Loop” riding areas. Periodic site maintenance would include repair/replacement of informational and directional signs and fencing and grading of the primary and spur roads. New disturbance would be limited to 0.5 acres between the staff parking area and the law enforcement storage area. The remainder of the work would occur within the existing camp area.

A copy of the DEA is available in the Carson City District BLM Office and on the project webpage at https://go.usa.gov/xEUKj during the 15-day comment period. Please send written comments to: Paul Amar, Project Lead, Stillwater Field Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road, Carson City, NV 89701.  Comments may also be submitted electronically via the DEA webpage (under the “Contact Information” section), via email to blm_nv_ccdowebmail@blm.gov or via fax at (775) 885-6147 with the subject heading “SMRA DEA”.
