NOME, Alaska – The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment through April 24 on a proposal to issue a long-term lease on public land at Safety Sound, 21 miles east of Nome.

The applicant is seeking a 20-year lease for continued occupation of the Safety Sound Roadhouse on BLM-managed public land.  The request is in accordance with the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 and conforms with the Kobuk Seward Land Use Plan approved in September 2008.

This 30-day scoping process is intended to solicit public input on relevant issues, potential impacts, and alternatives that the BLM should address in an environmental assessment of the proposal.  The BLM will consider all substantive comments received during the public scoping period to ensure the potential environmental consequences are analyzed in a manner that allows the BLM to make an informed decision about the proposal.

The BLM welcomes and values diverse views about the public land it manages on behalf of the American people. Comments will be accepted through April 24.  A link to the project proposal and other scoping documents on the BLM ePlanning website can be found at https://www.blm.gov/office/nome-field-station.
