Las Cruces, N.M. - Starting on Friday, April 21, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Cruces District will begin repairing the access road to Picacho Peak Recreation Area, northwest of Las Cruces. It will take BLM three weeks to repair the access road damaged from last year’s monsoon rains. While the work is completed, the Picacho Peak trailhead and picnic areas will remain open to the public.
Early this week, the BLM will transport the heavy equipment and road repair material to the Picacho Peak access road via the Las Cruces Airport Road, avoiding the Picacho Hills residential community. Once everything is in place, the BLM will begin installing erosion control structures on some of the major arroyos and crossing areas, as well as grading and adding fine gravel to the access road.
When driving to Picacho Peak trailhead and picnic area, the public is advised to drive safely and be aware of the road signs directing vehicles to slow down for the BLM heavy equipment and the operations staff conducting the repairs.
For more information on the road repairs and timeline, the public can visit the BLM Las Cruces District Office located at 1800 Marquess Street, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88005 or call 575-525-4300.
The Picacho Peak Recreation Area has more than 15 miles of hiking trails. The 1.5-mile trail to the 4,959-foot high peak provides spectacular views of the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains. Although most of the recreational use occurs on the peak, there are also large canyons and mesa tops to explore.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
