BLM to Offer Personal Use Fuelwood Permits in Northern Catron County

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Socorro and Rio Puerco Field Offices are offering personal use fuelwood permits for BLM-administered lands west of the Wildhorse subdivision in northeast Catron County.
Individuals with a permit may harvest dead and down fuelwood in the Tank Canyon Fuelwood Area located approximately 20 miles northeast of Pie Town, New Mexico, and 42 miles south of Grants, New Mexico. The Fuelwood Area is located in an area that the BLM recently thinned in order to help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire to adjacent private lands.
A personal use fuelwood permit for this area may be purchased at the BLM’s Socorro Field Office located at 901 South Highway 85 (California Street) in Socorro, New Mexico, or the Rio Puerco Field Office located in the Pan American Building at 100 Sun Avenue NE, Suite 330 Albuquerque, New Mexico. Permits cost $10 per cord with an eight cord limit per individual. All wood permits are sold for a specific area, are for personal use only, and are non-refundable, non-transferable, and not for resale.
Cutting of standing trees is not allowed in the Fuelwood Area, and the resale of fuelwood collected from personal use fuelwood areas is also prohibited. The Tank Canyon Fuelwood Area will be open until March 31, 2017; however, severe weather conditions could affect the permit expiration date.
