FARMINGTON, NM – As part of its ongoing efforts to better serve the public, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Farmington Field Office has begun offering permits for fuelwood online.

"The Taos Field Office has been offering online permits since September 2019, and we are pleased that this service is now available district-wide to include Farmington," said Farmington District Manager Al Elser. "Making these available online will relieve the public from the burden of having to drive over a hundred miles in some cases to their local BLM office to get permits."

The BLM has been offering permits to members of the public for harvest of forest products from BLM-managed land.  However, before online sales began, customers had to drive to their local BLM office – sometimes over very long distances – to buy these permits.

Now, customers in participating field offices can visit https://forestproducts.blm.gov to purchase fuelwood online.  Permits for other forest products still require an in-person office visit.  Once at the website, users can simply answer a few questions, enter payment information, and print their permit, haul tags, and maps.  Being able to print these materials is essential.  Without printing the permits and haul tags, permits are not legal.

This is a BLM-wide effort and many offices are beginning their fuelwood permit sales using the online system.  Online permits will be available – depending on the office and season – for fuelwood 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, while over-the-counter permits for these and other forest products will still be available during normal business hours by calling (505) 564-7600.

Online sales initially began with a pilot program last year.  “Due to the success and convenience for customers, the effort has continued and is improving,” said Elser.  “Having this system in place is proving extremely helpful, especially during times, like these, when our BLM Offices are not open to the public.”
