The Bureau of Land Management Eastern States (BLM ES) will make repairs to the horse-boarding facility at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area in Lorton, Va., in accordance with the findings of an Environmental Assessment (EA) released for public comment on February 18, 2014.The Meadowood Barn EA outlined the environmental impacts of alternatives for the structure. Basic renovations to the barn will be completed within its existing footprint using, to the extent possible, existing framing and structural components. The BLM will prioritize the work to be completed in phases, in order to eliminate the need to close the barn during the renovation. The BLM ES intends to offer a long term Commercial Recreational Lease for future operation, maintenance, and repair of the facility. All repairs are expected to be completed by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.“These repairs will conform to the Meadowood Special Management Activity Management Plan," said John Ruhs, BLM ES Acting State Director. “We are taking this action to improve the facility and ensure public safety, while sustaining a variety of equine activities available to the public, including trail riding and therapeutic riding lessons under a special use permit. The existing structure, erected in 1976, requires renovation to meet structural, plumbing, electrical, and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) codes, and to bring the structure into compliance with current federal, state and local public use safety standards for building construction.
