WASHINGTON – The Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States (BLM-ES) announced today that from January-March 2018, 272 wild horses or burros have been placed into private homes in states in the east. In addition to those 272 animals that have been adopted, 62 adults and 32 youths have picked up wild horses during this time period, to train them for competition at the Extreme Mustang Makeover, June 22-23, 2018, Lexington, Kentucky. These makeover events are sponsored by the Mustang Heritage Foundation, a BLM partner.
The wild horse and burro program provides opportunities for American families in local communities to adopt or purchase one of America’s Living Legends gathered from the western rangelands. Since 1971, when the adoption program began, the BLM-ES has placed over 80,000 animals into private care in the east. Mitch Leverette, Acting BLM-ES State Director, explained, “These scheduled events provide access for the public to come and view these special animals, and possibly purchase or adopt one to take home.” He explained, “The adoption/sale program is one way the BLM strives to decrease the number of animals in herd management areas in western states, enabling us to sustainably manage for healthy herds on healthy rangelands.”
