BLM to conduct prescribed fire in Cibola County

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Between March 19 - April 30, the Bureau of Land Management Rio Puerco Field Office will conduct the Chain of Craters prescribed burn in the El Malpais National Conservation Area, weather permitting. The burn will be conducted in several phases during this timeframe and consists of approximately 2,500 acres of ponderosa pine, piñon and juniper.
The Chain of Craters project is located south of State Hwy 53 and west of County Road 42, approximately 35 miles southwest of Grants, N.M. Specifically, the project is within multiple sections of Township 7 North, Range 13 West.
During the burn, prescribed fire signs will be posted along County Road 42 and at the Continental Divide Trailhead. Smoke may be visible from State Highways 53 and 117.
The goal of the burn is to use prescribed fire to reduce the density of ponderosa pine forest, the piñon and juniper woodland, and hazardous accumulations of vegetation that under the right conditions could contribute to high intensity crown fire.
