BLM Carson City District seeks partners to acquire environmentally sensitive land

CARSON CITY, Nev.– The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District is seeking partners to nominate projects for Acquisition of Environmentally Sensitive Land or Interests in Land (conservation easements) under the Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA).
The deadline for nominations within the BLM Carson City District are due by April 27, 2018.
SNPLMA, which became law in October 1998, allows BLM Nevada to sell public land within a specific boundary around Las Vegas, Nevada, but also funds projects elsewhere in Nevada. The revenue derived from land sales is split between the State of Nevada General Education Fund (5%), the Southern Nevada Water Authority (10%), and a special account available to the Secretary of the Interior for parks, trails, natural Areas, capital improvements, conservation Initiatives, hazardous fuels reduction and wildfire prevention as well as Lake Tahoe restoration.
SNPLMA provides a funding mechanism that allows the BLM to acquire environmentally sensitive land, or interests in land, within Nevada. Environmentally sensitive lands can be those that promote the preservation of natural or cultural resources, enhance recreational opportunities and public access, or provide for better management of public land through consolidation of ownership. The BLM Carson City District is seeking partners with proposals that meet these objectives within the BLM Carson City District boundaries, preferably adjacent to public lands managed by BLM.
Internal prioritization of proposals will be based on the degree to which the following criteria are met:
- Contribution towards preservation of a specially designated species,
- Preservation of significant natural, aesthetic or scientific features,
- Preservation of significant historic, paleontological, or cultural values,
- Enhancement of recreation opportunities or improvement of access to public lands, and
- Providing for better management of public lands and resource values.

Preliminary proposals for Round 18 nominations should include a map of the parcels proposed and should contain a one to two page write up that addresses: current use of the land, proposed use of the land (conservation easement proposals only), resources values and public benefits associated with acquisition, and how the proposal would meet the ranking criteria. Complete nomination packages do not need to be submitted at this time.
