Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management, Ely District’s Caliente Field Office is selling permits for Christmas trees and has extended a program to give free Christmas tree permits to fourth graders.

Christmas tree permits are $3 per tree plus a $1 road maintenance fee, for a total of $4 per tree.  There is a limit of 10 per purchaser.  Permits may be purchased in-person, by telephone or through the mail.

For the second year in a row, free Christmas tree permits are available to Nevada fourth graders as part of the U.S. Department of Interior’s “Every Kid in a Park” program.  BLM Nevada State Director John Ruhs authorized the free Christmas tree program for fourth graders to continue in Nevada this year.

As part of the Every Kid in a Park initiative, every fourth grader is eligible to receive a pass that allows free access to federal lands and waters across the country for a full year. The BLM will make available a free Christmas tree permit to every interested fourth grader with a valid 4th Grade Pass or paper voucher, which can be obtained on the website at www.everykidinapark.gov.

Permits will be sold over-the-counter at the Caliente Field Office, 1400 S. Front Street, in Caliente, through noon, Friday, Dec. 23, or until they are sold out, whichever comes first.  Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The office will also be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturdays-only, Nov. 26, and Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.

Mail-in requests will be accepted on a “first-come first-serve” basis through Friday, Nov. 18.  All mail-in requests must include payment in the form of a check or money order payable to the Bureau of Land Management.  Requests should be addressed to the BLM Caliente Field Office, PO Box 237, Caliente, NV 89008, Attn:  Christmas Tree Permits.  Please allow two weeks for processing.  Credit and debit cards are also accepted by calling the field office at (775) 726-8100.

Only pinyon pine, juniper and white fir may be harvested.  The cutting of all other trees is prohibited.  Christmas trees may be harvested on all BLM-administered public lands except those designated as wilderness or wilderness study areas.  The Ely (District) Resource Management Plan also prohibits Christmas tree harvesting in the Blue Mass, Highland Range, Lower Meadow Valley Wash, Mount Irish, Shoshone Ponds and Swamp Cedar areas of critical environmental concern.

For more information or to purchase a permit, call the BLM Caliente Field Office at (775) 726-8100
