BLM to Auction 9.6 Million Tons of Sand and Gravel

Las Vegas -- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will auction 9,588,000 tons of sand and gravel from a community pit in the northwest portion of Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday, March 3 at the BLM Las Vegas Field Office, 4701 North Torrey Pines. Bidding will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Mineral materials (sand and gravel) are used in everyday construction, agriculture, and decorative applications. Highways, bridges, power plants, dams, high-rise buildings, railroad beds and airport runways, along with their foundations and sidewalks, all use mineral materials of one type or another.
Sale contracts are offered for the Lone Mountain Community Pit, with access via Lone Mountain Road, Shaumber Road, or Washburn Road.
- N-92885: approximately 53.2 acres, 2,500,000 tons, 10 year, nonrenewable
- N-92886: approximately 17.8 acres, 388,000 tons, 2 year, renewable with special conditions
- N-92887: approximately 17.9 acres, 600,000 tons, 5 year, nonrenewable
- N-92888: approximately 139.4 acres, 4,000,000 tons, 10 year, renewable
- N-93012: approximately 19.2 acres, 100,000 tons, 2 year, renewable
- N-93022: approximately 55.4 acres, 2,000,000 tons, 10 year, renewable
Bidders must be authorized to transact business in Nevada. Bids will be by the ton and the minimum acceptable bid is $0.94 per ton. To be eligible to take part in the oral bidding, potential bidders must submit a separate five percent deposit for each contract they wish to bid on. The Las Vegas Field Office manages the largest BLM mineral materials program in the nation featuring seven active community pits and dozens of individual use areas that produce several million tons of sand and gravel per year. Last fiscal year, the Las Vegas Field Office sold almost $2.4 million dollars of sand and gravel.
Seventy-six percent of the money derived from BLM sales is deposited in the Reclamation (trust) Fund, 20 percent goes to the General (Federal) Treasury, and four percent goes to the state in which the sales were made.
