CANON CITY – On June 12, lightning caused two small fires near Spikebuck Recreation Area north of the Arkansas River, on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The fires are currently 1/10 of an acre each, and are located approximately ½ mile apart. Smoke from the fires is visible from Highway 50.
The Front Range Interagency Fire Management Unit is currently assessing the fires to determine next steps. The fires are located in steep terrain that is difficult to access, especially given flows in the Arkansas River.
“Firefighter and public safety is our number one concern when determining to engage a fire,” said Keith Berger, Royal Gorge Field Manager. “Due to poor access, difficult terrain and impending weather, no action will be taken on the fires today.”
Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire and next steps will be determined pending the outcome of today’s weather. The BLM is keeping other agencies appraised of the fire status and strategy for engaging the fire.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
