DILLON, Mont. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Dillon Field Office plans to conduct prescribed fire operations this spring in the South Tobacco Root Mountains near Sheridan and Virginia City, Montana. Burning operations will begin as early as late March and continue through mid-May, depending on weather and fuel conditions.

The prescribed burns will take place in the Granite Creek, California Creek, and Ramshorn Creek drainages, covering approximately 3,700 acres across multiple units. These treatments are designed to reduce hazardous fuels, improve rangeland health, and enhance wildlife habitat.

Planned burn units include:

  • Ramshorn Units 1 & 2: 2,012 acres (T5S, R4W, Sections 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 15)

  • California #1: 610 acres (T5S, R4W, Sections 12, 13, 14, 23, 24)

  • Granite #2: 1,142 acres (T5S, R3W, Sections 27, 28, 33, 34; T6S, R3W, Sections 3, 4)

Prescribed fire treatments are conducted under carefully managed conditions to ensure public safety and meet resource objectives. The BLM will coordinate closely with local fire agencies, landowners, and partners throughout the process. Ignition is expected to last multiple days per unit, with smoke potentially visible for several days following the burns.

Fire crews will monitor each burn area until it is declared out.
