CANON CITY, Colo. – On May 15, the Bureau of Land Management’s Royal Gorge Field Office authorized two new, non-motorized trails totaling 1.6 miles in the Fourmile-Barbara Whipple trail system east of Buena Vista, Colorado.

The BLM manages the popular trail system in partnership with the Town of Buena Vista and several volunteer groups, who are active in signing, mapping and maintaining the trails. The existing trails were designated in the 2002 Fourmile Travel Management Plan.

“The project is a testament to the great collaboration between BLM and our neighbors in Buena Vista.” said Royal Gorge Field Manager Keith Berger. “These new trails will enhance hiking, mountain biking and equestrian experiences. It is a win-win for everyone involved.”

The decision considered user conflicts, impacts to natural resources and illegal route proliferation. In 2015, recreation activities on BLM-managed lands generated $543 million and supported 4,625 jobs in Colorado.
