St. George, Utah – On Friday, April 29, 2016, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) St. George Field Office and BLM Arizona Strip District, in partnership with Southwest Utah National Conservation Lands Friends (SUNCLF) will host free a photography workshop featuring professional landscape photographer Bob Wick at the Interagency Center at 345 East Riverside Drive.

Mr. Wick’s stunning photos have appeared in a broad array of media including the Washington Post, Outside Magazine, National Geographic and CBS Evening News.  As a wilderness specialist for the Bureau of Land Management, Wick has traveled extensively throughout the western states and Alaska capturing images of some of the nation’s most remote and spectacular landscapes.

The presentation will begin in a classroom setting at the Interagency Center at 345 East Riverside Drive. The initial 60-90 minute presentation will provide an overview of composition techniques, natural light direction, primary camera controls of aperture and shutter speed to create images. Wick will also share photo examples from some of his favorite scenic hot spots on BLM lands throughout the west including northern Arizona and Southern Utah.

The classroom session will be followed by a two hour field session to put techniques to practice in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. The field session will include moderate hiking for up to 2-3 miles in backcountry terrain. Participants will need to bring water, snacks, layered clothing and are required to provide their own transportation. The primary focus of the field portion of the workshop will be on improving techniques for large-scale landscape photographs, but other subjects will be used to demonstrate various techniques. Time-lapse video shooting techniques will also be shared.

This is a novice to intermediate session. Participants will benefit from having a basic understanding of their primary camera controls and should bring along their manuals if they want to discuss specific controls on their camera.

Wick will also provide a Night Sky Photography workshop for hardy SLR photographers from 9:45 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. This course is geared to intermediate and advanced photographers who are comfortable with using manual settings on their cameras.

Those interested in participating in either of the two free public photography workshops must reserve their space by contacting Susan Crook by text or cell at 435-773-7920 or by email at susan@conserveswu.org.
