BISHOP, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management Bishop Field Office and Bishop Area Climbers Coalition will host a volunteer stewardship event on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Volunteers will rehabilitate areas of the Volcanic Tableland impacted by dispersed camping and prepare the Pleasant Valley Pit Campground for the annual influx of campers for the Eastern Sierra’s busy rock climbing season.
“We are excited to partner with the re-invigorated and recently formalized Bishop Area Climbers Coalition for its first shared conservation stewardship event,” says BLM Bishop Field Manager Steve Nelson. “The PV Pit Campground will get a much needed refresh, and the Volcanic Tableland will benefit from active stewardship focused on conserving the area’s natural and cultural values.”
Volunteers should meet at the Mountain Rambler Brewery parking lot in Bishop at 10 a.m. to carpool to the worksite. Work will include improving developed campsites, painting tables, and maintaining fire-pits in the PV Pit Campground. Helping hands are also needed to clean-up trash, remove fire-rings and help return Volcanic Tableland dispersed campsites to nature.
“Our shared goal is to make the PV Pit Campground a place that visitors choose to stay when recreating on public lands in the Bishop area,” says Nelson. “By staying in the campground, visitors can help minimize camping impacts and maintain the great recreation opportunities that make the Volcanic Tableland special.”
As stewards, the BLM manages public lands for the benefit of current and future generations, supporting conservation in pursuit of its multiple-use mission.
The BLM will provide tools, materials and tap water for drinking. Volunteers should wear clothes for painting and close-toed shoes, bring sunscreen, work gloves, water and lunch. Please contact the BLM Bishop Field Office for reasonable accommodations to participate. For specific question, call Biological Technician Erin Elliot at 760-872-5000.
