BURNS, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management today announced it will hold a meeting of the Southeast Oregon Resource Advisory Council. The public is welcome to attend the meeting, which will occur on Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16, at the Burns Paiute Tribe Gathering Center, 40 PaSiGo Street, Burns, Ore., beginning at 8 a.m. each day.
Resource Advisory Councils provide advice and recommendations necessary for the BLM to consider resource and land management issues within the agency. BLM maintains 38 chartered advisory committees located in the West. Resource Advisory Committees are sounding boards for BLM initiatives, regulatory proposals and policy changes. Each citizen-based council consists of 10 to 15 members from diverse interests in local communities. They assist in the development of committee recommendations that address public land management issues. Resource councils are critical in assisting the BLM in continuing to be a good neighbor in the communities that the agency serves.
Planned agenda items at the meeting include Lands with Wilderness Characteristics designation, sage-grouse management and programs, the national Wild Horse and Burros program, and cross-boundary fuel breaks.
“The diversity of members of the Southeast Oregon RAC’s membership provides us with valuable feedback from a broad range of stakeholders, which is very helpful to the BLM in meeting its multiple use mission,” Burns District Manager Jeff Rose said. “These volunteers work very hard to familiarize themselves with our work and to find common ground and consensus on sensitive issues.”
A half-hour comment period, during which the public may address the RAC, will begin at 11:15 a.m. Friday, March 16. Depending on the number of people wishing to comment and time available, the amount of time for individual oral comments may be limited.
