Fire danger in California is currently extremely high, with at least 14 large wildfires observed so far this fire season. Conditions remain dry around the state and temperatures will be hot this 4th of July weekend.Everyone has the responsibility to prevent human-caused wildfires. You can help prevent these destructive fires by following some simple guidelines:
- Be wheel safe: Check tire pressure. Driving on an exposed wheel rim throws sparks.
- Be prepared: Carry a shovel and a fire extinguisher in your vehicle and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV).
- Follow all public-use restrictions and access closures: It is important to check with local agencies about any closures before venturing off road.
- Keep vehicles off dry grass: Exhaust systems can heat up to 1,000 degrees and ignite adjacent grasses and shrubs.
- Check your spark arrester: Before heading outdoors, clean your OHV spark arrester. This will reduce the chance of a spark starting a wildfire.
- Nothing dragging: Make sure vehicles are properly maintained with nothing dragging on the ground.
Also, here are a few specific tips to help you be safe this 4th of July:
- If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
- Buy only State Fire Marshal-approved (Safe and Sane) fireworks.
- Have a bucket of water and a hose handy.
- Always read directions and have an adult present.
- Use fireworks outdoors only.
- Use common sense and keep a safe distance.
- Never attempt to re-light or "fix" fireworks.
