Mission
This information bulletin announces the availability of and describes the recent updates to the Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) Data Standard Version 5.
This data set represents WSA boundaries as inventoried in the mid-1980's and defined in the October 1991 "Wilderness Study Report." Wilderness Study Areas are essentially road-less areas meeting specific Wilderness Act criteria that are under BLM jurisdiction. Wilderness Study Areas have special management restrictions and priorities, as applied by Section 603 of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act [FLPMA and BLM’s WSA Management Manual (6330)]. WSA are a one-time designation and new WSA are no longer allowed and additions to a WSA are rare occurrence.
