Subject:  Hydrography Data Standard

This instruction bulletin (IB) establishes the Oregon/Washington (OR/WA) spatial data standard for Hydrography (see attached data standard document).  The data standard defines how this type of data is to be captured in a Geographic Information System (GIS), defines attributes used, and defines coding schemes (domains).  The data has been added to the corporate spatial data editing system.  The data can be edited by approved field personnel following established procedures and are also available for display and analytical purposes by all users.

The purpose of this dataset is to:

  • Provide a temporary location for recording pending edits from OR/WA field editors that are not yet implemented in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD).
  • Provide datasets for recording OR/WA Bureau of Land Management (BLM) specific attributes that are not captured in the NHD data standard.
  • Provide a publication dataset that combines NHD and BLM data into a usable format.

The draft data standard was issued for internal review and comment.  To see comments and responses to that review, contact Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at  503-808-6565, or by email at ehiebent@blm.gov.

Questions about the data standard should be directed to Michael Brown, State Data Steward for Hydrography, at 503-808-6662; Jay Stevens, GIS Technical Lead for Hydrography, at 503-8086480; or Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565.

Districts with unions are reminded to notify their unions of this IB and satisfy any bargaining obligations before implementation.  Your servicing Human Resources Office or Labor Relations Specialist can provide you with assistance in this matter.
