Subject: Site Potential Tree Height Data Standard
This instruction bulletin (IB) establishes the Oregon/Washington (OR/WA) spatial data standard for Site Potential Tree Height (SPTH) (see attached data standard document). The data standard defines how this type of data is to be captured in a Geographic Information System (GIS), defines attributes used, and defines coding schemes (domains). The data has been added to the corporate spatial data editing system. The data can be edited by approved field personnel following established procedures and are also available for display and analytical purposes by all users.
The SPTH dataset represents spatial location and basic information about the average maximum height of the tallest dominant trees (200 years or older) for a given site class in Western Oregon. Site potential tree heights generally range from 140 feet to 240 feet, depending on site productivity. This dataset is used to determine the extent of riparian reserve land use allocations around streams and rivers managed under one of the two 2016 RMPs for Western Oregon.
This data standard is effective immediately and is to be followed for all SPTH data, as specified in the data standard document.
The draft data standard was issued for internal review and comment under a previous IB. To see comments and responses to that IB, contact Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565, or by email at ehiebent@blm.gov.
Questions about the data standard can be directed to Carolina Hooper, State Data Steward for SPTH, at 503-315-5927; Craig Ducey, GIS Technical Lead for SPTH, at 503-808-6314; and Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565.
Districts with unions are reminded to notify their unions of this IB and satisfy any bargaining obligations before implementation. Your servicing Human Resources Office or Labor Relations Specialist can provide you with assistance in this matter.
