Information Bulletin No. 2017-037

To:                   All WO and FO Officials

Attn:  Deputy State Directors for Resources

From:               Assistant Director, Resources and Planning

Subject:           Request for Nomination of “Heritage Heroes” in 2017                                                                                                                                 DD:  06/15/2017

The Division of Cultural and Paleontological Resources and Tribal Consultation (WO-240) is soliciting nominations for Heritage Heroes in 2017.  Heritage Heroes may be BLM employees, volunteers or project partners who have provided significant support for the cultural heritage, history, paleontological resources, tribal consultation or museum collections programs.  By highlighting the outstanding work conducted by our Heritage Heroes, we can bring to life the stories that provide a model for preservation stewardship.  Each year, information from the heritage program’s annual report is provided to partner organizations or posted on state and national social media and websites.  These reporting efforts will publicly recognize and celebrate the accomplishments within the cultural heritage, history, paleontological resources, tribal consultation and museum collections programs.

This Information Bulletin requests each state office to:

  • Submit a minimum of one nominee; more nominations are welcome.
  • Choose individuals or groups who are employees of the BLM, BLM volunteers, or members of partner organizations.
  • Include up to two pages describing the contributions of the nominee(s) to the program.
  • Provide at least three photographs showing the nominee(s) in action.  Photographs must be of good quality, sufficient for BLM Daily publication, and captioned.

Nominations should be submitted to the Deputy State Director (DSD) for Resources in each state office by June 15, 2017.  All nominations and supporting documents, including photographs, will be forwarded to Byron Loosle, Division Chief, Cultural and Paleontological Resources and Tribal Consultation (WO-240).  The WO-240 Division will select and publicize the Heritage Heroes’ accomplishments.  The BLM has many such heroes among our employees, volunteers, and partners.  Heroes include our support staff and managers, as well as the BLM archaeologists, paleontologists and paleontological coordinators, tribal coordinators, and museum staff.  The winners will receive recognition and appreciation for their outstanding work.

The budget impact will be minimal, requiring a modest amount of time to solicit and provide nominations and winners.  If you have questions, please contact Ranel Stephenson Capron, Federal Preservation Officer, at (202) 912-7241 or rcapron@blm.gov
