Subject: Solicitation of Applications for Instructors for the BLM’s Volunteer Administration Training course (1100-02) DD: 10/01/2014
The Washington Office (WO) Division of Education, Interpretation and Partnerships is seeking instructors for the BLM Volunteer Administration Training course (1100-02). Please encourage Volunteer Coordinators or Resource Specialists with at least one year of experience working with volunteers at the BLM to apply for these positions.
Over 30,000 people volunteer annually for the BLM, providing roughly $26 million worth of service to the agency. In order to ensure tangible project results and fruitful volunteer experiences, employees responsible for recruiting, screening, training and supervising volunteers should receive training on how to operate a successful volunteer program at the BLM. Each year, the BLM holds Volunteer Administration Trainings for staff charged with managing volunteer programs or projects in their Field, District, and State Offices as well as at National Monuments and National Conservation Areas. An Instructional Bulletin (IB) is issued by the Washington Office in the fall each year to solicit site nominations from offices interested in hosting a two-day, in-person training sessions in the following calendar year. The National Volunteer Program Lead works with the National Training Center (NTC) to select training locations and set the annual training calendar, and the locations are announced via a second IB, through email, and website postings.
Interested candidates selected to serve as instructors for the BLM Volunteer Administration Training course would be expected to co-facilitate one or two sessions per year, with travel and per diem paid for by NTC. Participation in the NTC Instruction Seminar course is encouraged but not required. New instructors will be paired with more seasoned instructors during their first year co-facilitating the course. In addition to time spent onsite for the training session, some email and phone communication is needed in preparation for teaching the course. Overall, the time commitment is not excessive, and serving as an instructor will offer individuals the chance to gain and exercise facilitation and leadership skills on a national level. Serving as a course instructor also gives persons the opportunity to share their personal experiences and perspectives to help shape and promote the Volunteer Program bureau-wide, as well as gaining a broad perspective of the Volunteer Program by working with BLM staff and partners around the country.
Please use the attached application to apply for an instructor position with the BLM Volunteer Administration Training course, and submit applications to Linda Schnee, National Volunteer Program Lead in BLM’s Division of Education, Interpretation, and Partnerships, at lschnee@blm.gov. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor. Questions can be directed to Linda via email or you may reach her by phone at 202-912-7453. Submissions should be received by October 1, 2014, and applicants will be notified as soon as possible following the selection of candidates.
