Livestock grazing practices in the West are evolving, not only to preserve a way of life that is part of America’s heritage, but to help sustain a diversity of important public interests and values. The video presents a balanced perspective allowing the viewer to better understand how the role of livestock grazing is changing in the West. Traditions and beliefs of the “Old West” have often clashed with the reality and expectations of the “New West” and in many cases what has emerged is an improved “Best West.” The video is designed to dispel myths associated with use of western rangelands, and to advance the ideas of stewardship, sustainable multiple-use, and the interdependence of public and private rangelands. The program embraces the hope of ranching families to preserve a traditional way of life, the hope of communities to preserve their social fabric and existence, and the hope that rangelands can be managed sustainably such that the magnificent landscapes and great open spaces of the American West can be preserved as our legacy to future generations.This partnership also produced and released a 9-minute version of this DVD in 2009. The shorter version sends similar messages without using several case studies that are explored in the longer version. Copies of both versions of these videos are included with this information bulletin.Please help us to foster greater understanding about sustainable multiple-use, conservation, and good stewardship of the public lands by featuring one or both of these videos at all BLM visitor centers.
