Greening within the BLM is required by statute, regulation, and EOs. The following priority elements are discussed in the attached document:

  • Electronic Stewardship -- managing environmentally hazardous electronic assets using environmentally sustainable technologies and practices
  • Pollution Prevention and Recycling -- reducing the generation of wastes or contaminants
  • Alternative Energy Source Development -- development of renewable sources of energy that minimize the depletion of natural resources
  • Energy and Water Conservation -- reducing energy consumption and measuring and conserving water
  • Vehicle Fleet Management -- managing fleet vehicles to reduce petroleum consumption
  • Green Purchasing -- purchase or acquisition of goods and services with attributes that reduce harmful effects on human health and the environment
  • Sustainable Buildings and Facilities -- building features or requirements that conserve natural resources, and reduce pollution throughout their life cycles
  • Environmental Management System (EMS) -- management system for controlling the significant environmental aspects of an organization.

A Strategic Plan for Integrating Greening Strategies describes the framework and strategy for Greening activities within the BLM to meet the requirements identified in EO 13423 - Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management and other laws and regulations related to “Greening."This Greening strategy has been coordinated with the BLM's various Division of Environmental Quality and Protection (W0-280) programs, the Division of Business Resources (WO-850), Property, Procurement, and Engineering programs, and the Department of the Interior's Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance (OEPC).
