Subject: National Landscape Conservation System 10th Anniversary Celebration

In 2010, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS). Secretary Babbitt created the new system based on a new conservation model of forming bonds with local communities and making management decisions based on sound science. Secretary Salazar supports being responsible stewards of this Nation’s land and water. He understands BLM’s mission to help conserve, protect, and enhance the NLCS as part of this Nation’s treasured landscapes.

Tenth anniversary events will focus on increasing awareness and understanding of the NLCS by celebrating our accomplishments and setting the stage for the challenges and achievements of the next 10 years.

A 10th Anniversary Steering Committee has been established to plan and implement this exciting celebration. The committee members are:

Co-chairs: Jim Murkin, Dave Hunsaker
Co-Leads: Jeff Jarvis, Mary Tisdale, and Jeff Krauss.
Lead Staff: Bonnie Winslow
Members: Lauren Pidot, Bibi Booth, Mel Lloyd, Diane Nelson, Bob Radcliffe, Richard Hanes, Peter Doran, Robin Fehlau, and Britta Hall.

The BLM Washington Office will be hosting national events and developing educational products, exhibits, and media tool kits for field use. Many of you will be commemorating your own anniversary or hosting special events such as National Public Lands Day or National Trails Day. These events provide opportunities for showcasing the individual NLCS units and our tremendous success in utilizing local communities and partners. There may be opportunities for combining celebrations and partnering due to multiple NLCS components in or near each other.

We encourage all areas to consider incorporating the NLCS 10th anniversary into any of your activities next year.
