To: All Field Offices

From: Division Chief, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services

Subject: Assistance in Developing and Producing Interpretive Products

Program Area(s): Recreation, Travel, Tourism and Visitor Services

Purpose: This Information Bulletin (IB) announces the availability of Richard Ray, a National Interpretive Media Specialist, to provide technical assistance on interpretative projects and planning.

Policy/Action: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)’s Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (WO-250) has assigned Richard Ray, a National Interpretive Media Specialist, to provide technical assistance to Field offices working on visitor centers and interpretive plans, projects, exhibits and other interpretive activities. Requests for assistance should be made by E-mail providing a general description of the project, the type of assistance requested, when the assistance is needed, and an estimate of the amount of time required. Field offices should send the original request to Rich Ray (Rich_Ray@blm.gov) with copies to Amy Galperin (Amy_Galperin@blm.gov) and Patrick Wilkinson (Patrick_Wilkinson@blm.gov). The Division of Recreation and Visitor Services will endeavor to accommodate all requests on a priority basis and will cover all of the labor costs for Rich Ray. Field offices will be expected to share associated travel costs based on negotiations for Rich Ray’s assistance.

Timeframe: Effective immediately.

Budget Impact: Minimal. Field Offices will be requested to share travel costs.

Background: For several years Richard Ray, a National Interpretive Media Specialist, has assisted BLM Field Staff in developing and producing interpretive products. Mr. Ray is located in the Utah State Office and works for the Washington Office National Recreation and Visitor Services Division (WO-250).

Mr. Ray assists Field Offices by consulting on interpretive media, assisting with interpretive exhibit designs and visitor center exhibits, and reviewing interpretive plans and projects. He is not available to work directly as either the project manager or as field project coordinator. These latter responsibilities must remain with the Field Office. His availability for project support is based on BLM priorities, partnership involvement, existing work load and availability of funding for the project completion. A portion of Mr. Ray’s time has been dedicated to assist with projects benefiting units of the National Landscape Conservation System.

Manual/Handbook Sections Affected: None.

Coordination: This IB was prepared in consultation with the National Landscape Conservation Office (WO-170).

Contact: If you have any questions, please contact Richard Ray, National Interpretive Media Specialist, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (WO-252), at (801) 539-4076 or Amy Galperin, National Lead for Interpretation, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (WO-252), at (303) 239-3960.
