BOISE, Idaho–The BLM Boise District Office will host a wild horse adoption June 7 - 8 at the Boise Wild Horse Off-Range Corral just off Pleasant Valley Road. There will be approximately 60 wild horses and seven burros available this weekend.

  • Friday, June 7

10 a.m.– 4 p.m., first come, first served adoption

  • Saturday, June 8

9 a.m. – 1 p.m., first come, first served adoption

The available wild horse mares and geldings range in age from one to ten years old, and the jenny or female burros are three to ten years of age.

As part of the program’s efforts to find every wild horse and burro a good home, the BLM offers up to $1,000 to adopt an untrained animal. This incentive will be offered for every animal in Boise. Since its launch five years ago in 2019, the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Incentive Program has played a vital role in supporting our mission to manage healthy herds of wild horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. Through the Adoption Incentive Program, we have been able to find loving homes for thousands of wild horses and burros, save taxpayers money, help alleviate the strain on their natural habitats and promote long-term health and prosperity for our wild herds and other wildlife.

With some time and patience, adopting a wild horse or burro can be a very rewarding experience.  Wild horses and burros are extremely adaptable and can be trained for many uses. Wild horses have become champions in dressage, jumping, barrel racing, endurance riding, and pleasure riding, while burros excel in driving, packing, riding, guarding, and serving as companion animals. Both wild horses and wild burros are known for their sure-footedness, strength, intelligence, and endurance. Since 1973, the BLM has placed more than 290,000 of these animals in approved homes across the country.

BLM staff will approve applications onsite. To qualify:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse.
  • Homes must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water and shelter.
  • Corral fence must meet height requirements:
    • Adult horses - 6 feet
    • Yearlings - 5 feet
    • Burros - 4.5 feet
