BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. – The Mount Lewis Field Office concluded the FY2025 Fish Creek Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather near Eureka, Nevada, on Jan. 11, 2025. The BLM gathered 194 wild horses Jan. 6-9. The BLM released 27 stallions, and 23 fertility-control treated mares back to the Creek HMA, Jan. 10. Of those gathered, the BLM removed 144 excess wild horses from the Fish Creek HMA.

The purpose of the gather was to prevent undue or unnecessary degradation of the public lands associated with excess wild horses, to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, consistent with the provisions of Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. Removing excess animals would also enable significant progress toward achieving the Standards for Rangeland Health identified by the Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council.

The action was also necessary to reduce overpopulation of wild horses within and outside the Fish Creek HMA, where there currently are limited water resources to support the number of horses in the area, and to prevent further degradation of public lands by helping to balance herd size.

The BLM shipped the 144 animals it removed from the range to the Winnemucca Off-Range Corrals located in Winnemucca, Nevada to be readied for the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sales Program. Wild horses that are not adopted or sold will be placed in long-term pastures where they will be humanely cared for and retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
