LAS VEGAS – In anticipation of weather impacts from Hurricane Hilary, BLM Southern Nevada District strongly encourages reconsideration of plans to recreate on public lands over the next several days.
From August 19 through August 21, the 13-Mile Scenic Drive and visitor center will be closed at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. At Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, the visitor contact station and road leading to it will be closed during the same time period. Additional areas may be closed depending on flooding.
“We understand that recreating is an incredible way to enjoy public lands,” said Angie Bulletts BLM Southern Nevada District Manager. “While visitation is lower during the summer months, we still ask that folks refrain from recreating in areas that aren’t strictly closed during this time period. By doing this, we will be better able to provide for public safety. Conditions are expected to change rapidly and flash flooding is a virtual certainty.”
General desert safety tips:
- When hiking, avoid canyons during rainstorms and be prepared to move to higher ground.
- When driving, be alert for water running in the normally dry desert washes and across road dips.
- Do not walk nor drive through flood water across a road.
- Let friends or family know where you are going and what time you expect to be back.
- Don’t reply on mobile phones as coverage can be unreliable or non-existent, especially in canyons.
