WINNEMUCCA, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management, Humboldt River Field Office, invites you to the grand opening of the Porter Springs Recreation Area from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on Saturday April 28. This new recreation area is located approximately 1 hour (31 miles) northwest of Lovelock, Nevada in Pershing County.
The 640-acre Porter Springs Recreation Area has a long history of use by Native Americans, explorers and 20th century miners who lived at the site and milled tungsten from a nearby mine. The recreation area includes natural springs, a pond, shade and fruit trees and a rich riparian habitat that draws over 130 species of birds and other wildlife.
“The site offers opportunities for bird watching, hiking, camping, picnicking and wildlife and burro viewing,” said David Kampwerth, Field Manager for the Humboldt River Field Office. “We are looking forward to sharing this new recreation area with the public and are seeking volunteers and partners to help us take care of and improve this site in the future.”
Over the last two years, the BLM has been implementing the Porter Springs Management Plan. A fence has been installed around the main part of the recreation area in order to protect the rich riparian habitat and shade trees that make this area an oasis in the desert. There are picnic tables and fire rings within the fenced area and walk-in tent camping is allowed. Outside the fence, a vault toilet, gravel parking area, picnic tables and fire rings have been installed and vehicle camping is allowed. Interpretive signs have been installed explaining the rich natural and cultural values and recreation opportunities in this small but beautiful jewel in the desert.
There will be brief introduction at 10:30 a.m. followed by a guided tour of the site led by the BLM and partners. This is a family friendly event with activities for children led by Nevada Outdoor School. Seating is limited, so please bring a folding chair if possible. Light refreshments will be provided following the tour. Hope to see you there!
