MOAB, Utah — The Bureau of Land Management Moab Field Office announces a second comment period for feedback on a proposal to limit camping to designated sites in a portion of the Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges Special Recreation Management Area northwest of Moab, Utah. If approved, this proposal would limit camping to designated campsites and would require the use of a fire pan and packed-out ash from fires, in addition to prohibiting wood-gathering, collecting, and cutting in the 187-square mile area. The BLM will accept comments on this proposal through April 21, 2023.
“The BLM proposes to designate sites where dispersed camping can occur sustainably,” said BLM Moab Field Manager David Pals. “Following requests for additional information about dispersed campsites during the initial spring 2022 comment period, our team updated this proposal with an inventory of more than 365 known dispersed camping locations. We appreciate the vital role of the public’s interest and look forward to additional feedback.”
The public lands within the Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges area include popular sites for Moab residents and visitors to the area. Biking, horseback riding, hiking, scenic driving, climbing, slacklining and BASE jumping are popular uses. This proposal would support camping opportunities in a manner that will minimize resource damage and public health and safety issues that are currently being experienced in this area.
Written comments will be accepted by letter, ePlanning, or email until Apr. 22, 2023. The most useful comments are specific and contain new technical or scientific information relevant to the proposed action. While comments may be made on the entire proposal, the BLM is asking for specific feedback on the dispersed campsite inventory. Comments that contain only opinions or preferences will not receive a formal response but may be considered in the BLM decision-making process. Please reference “Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges Camping Proposal” when submitting comments.
