Monument Advisory Committee

LAS VEGAS – In accordance with Presidential Proclamation 10533, “Establishment of the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument,” the Bureau of Land Management is seeking nominations for members of a Monument Advisory Committee to provide information and advice on the development of a management plan and, as appropriate, management of the Monument. The 30-day nomination period is now open for the recruitment of 15 members to serve on the committee and will close on August 29, 2024.

“This advisory committee will provide BLM with vital feedback and lead to well-informed management of Avi Kwa Ame National Monument,” said Bruce Sillitoe, Las Vegas Field Office Manager. “It is extremely important diverse voices are heard. We encourage anyone who represents the membership categories and is interested in being a member to apply.”

The majority of the 15-member committee will be made up of members of Tribal Nations with historical connection to the lands within the Monument. Additional members will include individuals representing developed outdoor recreation activities; dispersed recreational activities, including hunting or wildlife organizations; the conservation community; archeological and historical interests; local business owner; an elected official from local government; and a member of the public-at-large.

As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to protect historically and scientifically important sites, honor culturally significant areas, and conserve and restore our treasured outdoor spaces, President Biden signed Presidential Proclamation 10533 on March 21, 2023, to provide permanent protection of the unique landscape contained within the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. This designation protects sacred space for spiritual uses—including Spirit Mountain, which is central to the creation story of many Tribal Nations—and ensures continued access to hunting, camping, hiking, recreational use, photography, and other activities.
