RENO, Nev. —The Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Corrections – Silver State Industries will offer animals online, from November 3-10, 2020. The adoption is being coordinated through the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Online Corral. The NNCC trained animals adopted will only be available for pickup on December 12 from the Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley Center, located in Reno, Nevada.
Prior to the adoption, in order to be eligible to place a bid during the event, interested public must complete the online application, browse the individual animal profiles and learn more about the rules and requirements for adopting a wild horse or burro located at https://wildhorsesonline.blm.gov/. Applications must be completed by November 1 as they are reviewed in the order they are received and may take more than five business days to review based upon the volume of applications received.
"Without the annual Northern Nevada Correctional Center’s June and October inmate training adoption events this year, these animals have benefited from all the extra time with their trainers," said Hank Curry, Head Trainer at the NNCC. “They’re ready to continue their training and many will make excellent pleasure, show or work horses.”
Up to 20 saddle-trained wild horses and one halter-trained wild burro from herd management areas located on BLM administered public lands will be offered, for adoption, on the On-line Corrals adoption event. One mustang, Franky, is also cart-trained. The animals offered have been started at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program and have received over 120 days of training. The once-wild horses range in age from 3 to 9 years old and vary in weight and color; the burro is 7 years old. Videos of the animals offered are posted at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm2_HkkLFClTEkHu5Dzkf-A/playlists.
For more than 25 years, the Nevada Department of Corrections – Silver State Industries has shared the BLM’s commitment to place excess wild horses and burros into private care in order to maintain healthy animals on healthy, productive public rangelands. The program is a win-win situation for all involved. Inmates who are released after working in this program have a greater chance to succeed in the outside world; adoptions help the BLM manage wild horse populations on public lands; and finally, adopters find good horses and horses find good homes.
