Subject: Volunteer Training 2009
The Washington Office Division of Education, Interpretation, and Partnerships is soliciting nominations for site locations for the Basic Volunteer Administration training course that will be offered later this year.
This day and a half training course provides the basic knowledge, skills, and tools needed to administer a successful volunteer program at the state and field office levels. Attendees will learn how to (1) execute forms and prepare documentation; (2) apply procedural rules and regulations; (3) market the program and recruit volunteers; (4) report program achievements and maintain records; (5) engage in the six fundamentals of volunteer management (writing job descriptions, recruiting, selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating).
No registration fees are charged but participants are expected to cover their own travel costs to the training location. This highly successful course will be taught by seasoned volunteer coordinators from throughout the Bureau. We strongly encourage your volunteer coordinators, resource specialists, and field managers who are interested in working with volunteers to attend this excellent nuts and bolts course on volunteer administration.
Please note that the BLM Volunteer Program National Strategy 2004 (Goal 3, Objective 1, Action 1) requires that all BLM Volunteer Coordinators attend the Basic Volunteer Administration Course within six months of beginning Volunteer Coordinator duties; longer term volunteer coordinators should attend the course within one year. A minimum of 12 attendees is required for the course to be held at any given site.
Please contact Shelly Fischman (202-452-0359) by February 10 if you would like training in your state and advise him of at least two dates after March 15, 2009, that would work for you, the number of attendees you expect, and which of those attendees have never had this training. Shelly will also be happy to answer any questions that you may have. Site locations will be chosen based on both demand and need and the number of attendees who have never had training before. The Washington Office will make every effort to offer training to those sites that have requested it depending on the availability of Washington Office travel funds for the trainers.
