SALT LAKE CITY — This week, BLM Utah State Director Greg Sheehan announced he would be leaving his position as BLM Utah State Director to be the CEO of the Mule Deer Foundation.

“I have loved working with all the amazing women and men at BLM Utah; it has been an honor,” said BLM Utah State Director Greg Sheehan. “I am looking forward to this next phase of my career.”

Sheehan was appointed to the state director position in 2020 and has served for more than three decades in state and federal service, always demonstrating a desire to hear from all sides and balance multiple uses.

"Greg has been a terrific state director, because he knows Utah so well,” said BLM Director Tracy Stone-Manning. “We are sad to see him go but pleased that wildlife and conservation across the West will now benefit from his understanding of the work and commitment to building partnerships to achieve shared stewardship goals.”

During his more than four years as State Director, Sheehan has led the highest growth in recreation visitation in the state, exceeding 11 million per year; overseen collaborative improvements to the Wild Horse and Burro program through partnerships; directed development of management plans for National Monuments and recreation areas; integrated stewardship with local Tribes, nonprofits, and governments; and funded almost $60 million of improved access to public lands across Utah. Sheehan led a team that administers nearly 22.8 million acres of public lands, representing about 42% of the state.

Sheehan served as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Principal Deputy Director from 2017 to 2018 and served for 25 years in the Utah Department of Natural Resources and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources – the last five as Director. He will remain the role of BLM’s Utah State Director until mid-October.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
