KANAB, Utah — Today, the BLM announced a seven-day public comment period on the draft environmental assessment for an Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ES&R) Project following the Deer Springs Fire at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. All project documentation is available for public review at https://tinyurl.com/35x9m5fxThe public comment period opens today and closes Aug. 28, 2024.

The human-caused Deer Springs Fire started on July 7, 2024, and burned 11,766 acres before firefighters reached full containment on July 30, 2024. Due to the size and severity of the fire, we are now analyzing ES&R actions. This initiative is our immediate response to address post-wildfire safety and resource concerns.

The public is encouraged to review and comment on the environmental assessment (EA), which proposes emergency stabilization efforts that could significantly improve the affected areas.  The EA analyzes three alternatives, a no-action alternative and two action alternatives. Information and detailed analysis for all alternatives can be found in the EA.

The proposed action includes aerial application of a native perennial seed mix, followed by chaining and mastication in selected areas. Stabilization efforts on slopes greater than 30 percent would include straw baling with seeded sterile wheat to reduce erosion potential.

These stabilization efforts are designed to enhance seed distribution and soil contact, which will establish perennial cover to prevent erosion, promote infiltration of rainwater, and help stop the invasion of noxious and invasive weeds. Additionally, the proposal includes rehabilitation actions to replace burned infrastructure (fences, catchment apron, etc.) and construction of exclusion fences are also included.

Interested members of the public, local governments, Tribal Nations, organizations, and other stakeholders are encouraged to provide comments during the public comment period to help refine the proposed action, clarify issues, and identify new issues.

Public comments on the draft EA should be submitted via the ePlanning website, or by mail or hand delivered to: BLM GSENM, Attn Deer Springs ES&R, 669 South Highway 89A, Kanab, UT, 84741. All mailed comments must be post marked by Aug. 28, 2024.
