MOAB, Utah — The BLM is seeking public comments on a draft environmental assessment of the Rio Algom Monitoring Well Plan Modification project. The environmental assessment analyzes Rio Algom’s proposal to install additional groundwater monitoring wells, drill pads, and access routes to inform cleanup efforts at the former Lisbon Valley Uranium Mine and Mill in San Juan County.

Since 2001, Rio Algom has assessed and monitored groundwater at the former mill, which produced uranium from 1972 until 1989. The current effort will gather the data needed for the company to develop a groundwater corrective action plan for the site.

“This Monitoring Well Plan Modification is to evaluate and address possible contamination,” said Moab Field Office Manager Dave Pals. “Responsible mining requires remediation. Rio Algom will be sampling groundwater to address gaps in data at the sites to determine future corrective action.”

The public comment period will close Nov. 21, 2024. Comments may be submitted through the “Participate Now” option at the BLM National NEPA Register, or delivered to the Bureau of Land Management, Attn: Rio Algom Plan Modification, 82 E. Dogwood, Moab, UT 84532. Additional information, including the draft environmental assessment, is available at the BLM National NEPA Register.

For questions about Rio Algom’s Mine Plan of Operations and the draft environmental assessment, contact BLM NEPA Specialist Nicole Flint at 435-259-2164.
