MOAB, Utah — The BLM today announced approval of two mineral exploration projects on public lands northwest of Moab in Grand County. American Potash is located in the 29,956-acre Red Wash Potash Leasing Area which was designated by the 2016 Moab Master Leasing Plan and applies stringent reclamation requirements and sets limits on surface-disturbing activities. A1 Lithium is located along State Route 313. Both projects are expected to conclude within two years, upon which both companies are required to plug the holes to return the disturbed area to a natural state.

“The BLM is tasked with ensuring public lands serve multiple sustainable and dynamic uses, whether those are recreation-based activities or opportunities for responsible mineral and energy development,” said Moab Field Manager Dave Pals.

The American Potash LLC Green River Potash project is approved to explore for potassium-bearing minerals and lithium by drilling up to four holes with approximately 13 acres of total surface disturbance. Potash is often used as agricultural fertilizer. Lithium is used in rechargeable batteries including for cars, computers, and cell phones. The decision and associated planning documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register.

The A1 Lithium Mineral Exploration project is approved to assess quantities of lithium, bromine, and associated locatable minerals by re-entering two plugged and abandoned wellbores with approximately seven acres of total surface disturbance. Bromine is often used in agriculture and sanitation, as well as fire retardants. The decision and associated planning documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register.
