Emergency Management Programs & Resources

BLM’s primary emergency missions involve:

  • Wildland fire suppression in the 12 western states
  • Oversight of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and other critical infrastructure traversing public lands, such as the San Juan pipeline
  • Response to All Hazards emergencies such as oil/gas spills and hazmat incidents

Engineering and Environmental Services

The Division of Engineering and Environmental Services (E&ES) support many established BLM program areas. For example, the E&ES plays a proactive policy role in hazard and risk management, facility construction and management, hazardous materials response, and cleanup of abandoned mine sites, all of which can have an impact on other Bureau programs and land management initiatives.

The National Interagency Fire Center

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho is the nation’s support center for wildland firefighting. Seven federal and state agencies call NIFC home and work together to coordinate and support wildland fire and disaster operations.

The Office of Fire and Aviation

The National Office of Aviation is responsible for aircraft operation support for wildfire and resource management missions within the Bureau.  BLM’s aviation program is the largest within the Department of Interior’s eight Bureaus.  Aircraft are Bureau owned, contracted and are obtained as Call-When-Needed (CWN) or Aircraft Rental Agreement (ARA) to fill the mission requirements to meet BLM management objectives.  Mission requirements are to support Wildland fire and prescribed fire operations, disaster response, animal census, wild horse and burro gather, habitat management, range survey, cadastral survey, law enforcement, forest management, photo mapping, search and rescue, and other uses related to public land and resource management.
