BLM to host ONA Day at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse in Jupiter, Fla.

FLOWOOD, Miss. — The BLM will host its annual open house and celebration of the designation of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area on May 9 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at 500 Captain Armour’s Way, in Jupiter, Florida.

The event will occur on the Lighthouse Deck below the National Register of Historic Places listed Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and include the formal opening of the ONA’s new restroom and meeting house facilities.

“Our work in recreation management will enhance opportunities for the American family," said Southeastern States District Manager Robert Swithers. "As we strive to maintain relationships with stakeholders, we will also continue seeking value in how communities use public lands and their voices."  

This event is open to the public and includes an opportunity to learn about the ONA, its accomplishments over the past year and its upcoming projects. Guests are invited to tour the historic corridor and new facilities while learning about outgrowth, native recruitment, and the success of the existing living shoreline project. The formal opening of the facilities will occur at approximately 6 p.m. followed by the annual community meeting where BLM staff will present key information, recognize key partner accomplishments and be available to answer questions.

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA and its namesake lighthouse, are iconic features of the North Palm Beach County communities of the Town of Jupiter, Jupiter Inlet Colony, Jupiter Island, and the Village of Tequesta. The site is also of regional interest as a destination in South Florida, receiving about 100,000 annual visitors who come for cultural appreciation, historic interpretation, environmental education, and to relax while enjoying the site’s scenic beauty, crystal clear turquoise waters, and abundant recreational opportunities. The ONA and its on-site partners support over $10 million in economic impact from visitors to the public lands, providing direct employment opportunities, internships and volunteer positions to continue to engage all age groups in productive, beneficial, and rewarding work that inspires community support and appreciation for the BLM, the ONA, and all public lands.
