Prescribed Fire Planned for Tooele County At Timpie PointContact: Erin Darboven 801.977.4328 Salt Lake City, Utah—June 17, 2008—Fire management officials at the Salt Lake Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management are planning to ignite a prescribed fire in Tooele County, 17 miles west of Grantsville, Utah next week. The Timpie Point Prescribed Fire treatment is 231 acres, given its location along I-80 and SR-196, a moderate amount of attention from commuters and local residents is expected while smoke and flames are visible. Timpie Point was identified as a treatment area because of frequent fire activity, three to five fires per year, combined with its recreational value and location along I-80. Increases of unwanted human caused fire on Timpie Point have allowed the prolific invasion of highly flammable cheatgrass. The prescribed fire treatment will reduce fire suppression costs related to unwanted human caused fires while enhancing the safety of the public land users and adjacent landowners. The Timpie Point area will be evaluated every spring to assess the need for burning to maintain vegetation and subsequent safety objectives. Utah Smoke Management rules will be adhered to. The area will be monitored following ignition until the fire is declared out. For more information checkout www.utahfireinfo.gov. |
